After a hot and tiring day in France’s Loire region, the Domaine de Chesnaies chambre d’hôte (guest room) was a lovely place to come home to. I say home because the owners, Olivier and Catherine, immediately made me feel welcome and at ease.
The domaine is located 15 minutes of the French village Angers, amidst the fields of colzas and vineyards. The house has several cozy and spacious rooms with seperate bathrooms, a common room to read to or meet your fellow travelers and dining room, where (delicious!) breakfast is served in the morning.
As not many restaurants were open that day (a Tuesday, out of season) they gladly let us join at their dinner table and surprised us with a delicious homecooked 3 course meal. The use of local, fresh ingredients, every dish accompanied with wine from their own vineyard and the effortless conversations with this warmhearted couple made it the perfect evening to a perfect day.
Not only the house and its owners are a pleasure, the 19th century garden is beautiful with all its colours, little hidden places to sit and original, romantic feel. Do take time to stroll around in this garden when you visit this Domaine, you won’t regret it.
I wish I had had time to visit their other garden and vineyard, as Olivier makes his own wine, too. Perhaps Catherine and her sweet dog would have showed us around, that would have been lovely. Either way, I’m glad I got to spend the night there, it’s one of the most welcoming and beautiful chambres d’hôtes I’ve ever been to.
If you’re visiting the Loire region and are up for a relaxing get-away, I’d definitely recommend this place. Kind hearted owners, romantic garden, great food, delicious self-made wine…Make sure to stop by when you’re in the area!
